Reprise: 2001 Collegiate ChampionSatisfying barbershop style, done with flair by Reprise, 2001 champion Updated: 8/27/2002 1:03:00 PM It was around this time last year that we came together as a quartet, primarily intending to sing music of a religious nature. As I look back on where the past year has taken us, I can't figure out just how we got here from there. While barbershop wasn't a priority for the quartet for the first couple months we existed, we quickly realized how satisfying the style can be to sing, and how satisfying it can be to perform. The Saltaires played a significant role in our awakening to the world of Barbershop. It was their excitement and overwhelming support that ignited our confidence and desire to go for the gold in Nashville. We would soon find that while the Saltaires may have harbored some bias for the college quartet from their hometown, they weren't the only ones who oozed enthusiasm for this most fabulous hobby called barbershop. At the prelims in Pocatello, Idaho, then at the big competition in Nashville, and again back in the Rocky Mountain District Championship in Greely, Colorado, the reception extended to us, a brand new quartet to the Society has been nothing less than incredible, not to mention a bit humbling. I for one could do this forever. But forever is a long time, and who knows what tomorrow will be like for Reprise. In the meantime, we'll sing our hearts out for anyone who'll listen. We're excited for all the invitations we've received to be representatives for the Society at University Summits, chapter shows, and private parties where we'll probably be introducing barbershop to a few unfortunate ears who have not yet experienced it. Eventually, our sights are set on Portland, where we'll try our voices amidst the big boys and see how we measure up. In other words, for as long as we can, we want to follow the advice that Greg Lyne gave us in our first competition in Pocatello, "Sing the music the very best you can; be as perfect as you can be, not to be better than anyone else, but because that's the way it deserves to be sung." |
