What to expect at CDWI-2 (Chorus Directors Workshop Intensive)When you're ready to take your skills to the next level, the CDWI-2 workshop can help you get there. Get an overview of the workshop activities here. Updated: 9/24/2002 3:05:00 PM The CDWI-2 program is a modification of the original Chorus Directors Workshop Intensive (CDWI) program designed in 1995. To date, more than 500 directors and assistant directors have participated in the CDWI program. The ever-increasing demands of the directors for an expansion of the original CDWI has evolved into this second phase directorial training. Many of the aspects between a CDWI and a CDWI-2 are similar. Both involve two trainers, a maximum of five directors from a specific geographical area, a local chorus, videotape reviews, etc. The differences are designed to meet the requests of the directors and manifest themselves in this manner: Prior to the workshop: While there is no “conference call” involving all the workshop participants, each participating director will be contacted individually by one of the trainers prior to the workshop. The trainer will ensure that the director has participated in at least one CDWI workshop prior to the CDWI-2 and will try to get a feeling as to the director’s level of acceptance of the CDWI principals. Having gone through a CDWI is an absolute pre-requisite for participation in the CDWI-2. There will be no exceptions.
Morning sessionA change from the orginal CDWI, this has been shortened to two hours, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The CDWI-2 will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by 5:00 p.m. The morning session will consist of the following segments: (Time frames are approximate) Introductions and review of the CDWI principles including: (20 minutes)
Share, amongst the group, successes and moments of effectiveness when using the skills previously learned at the CDWI. (30 minutes)Each director will have the opportunity to review his progress regarding the skills addressed in the previous CDWI. Seek to discover any modification in the mission for the men established in the previous CDWI. (10 minutes)Has the mission for the men changed and if so, how would it affect the rest of the day’s efforts in the CDWI-2. Obstacles and skill identification for the day. (60 minutes)The directors will identify the obstacles they are currently facing with their own chorus and the trainers will then assist them in determining some conducting/rehearsal techniques that would eliminate or reduce the obstacles. CDWI-2 is concerned with identifying and sharing ideas, techniques, and skill modifications that can be made by the director to help in overcoming his obstacles. No more than two new skills will be identified to work on, but each director will have the option of also allowing the trainers to comment on the two skill addressed in the prior CDWI. Afternoon sessionThis now includes more time in front of the chorus. The volunteer chorus is brought in at 1:00 p.m. for a brief warm-up and instructions from the trainers. The directors start working with the chorus at 1:15 p.m. for three segments (12 minutes, 10 minutes, and 10 minutes in length). The rotation of directors working in front of the chorus is designed so that all participants the opportunity to observe each other. The directors alternate between the trainers so that each director will have the opportunity to get one on one input from each trainer. The directors would conclude their first segment of 12 minutes in front of the chorus and then go to a video tape review with the trainer. Here the trainer will point out director’s successes and identify opportunities for additional improvement. The director will then have the opportunity to further self-review the tape in an additional room. Here the director is given the chance to practice the identified skills in an effort to create a higher comfort level in the second and third segment. (In order to accomplish this the CDWI-2 requires two video playback rooms) . After all the participants have had the opportunity to work with the chorus for the third time, the chorus is excused and the trainers and directors have their wrap-up session. The workshop should be completed by 5:00 PM or shortly thereafter. |
