Tips for Success as a Chorus Director

Updated: 9/27/2007 10:03:49 AM

Want to know the secret of being a successful chorus director…who doesn’t. Well, students at Directors College were asked to, “List three habits of successful chorus directors.” Below are some of the responses:

  • Directors are specifically positive
  • Directors constantly seek to educate themselves
  • Directors rely on what they hear
  • Directors plan rehearsals and come in with a plan every week based on the needs perceived from the previous week.
  • Directors always listen to accurately identify music problems
  • Directors look for new ways to educate members on how to be better singers
  • Directors are energetic and positive
  • Directors recognize that the music tells a story
  • Directors practice outside of rehearsal
  • Directors set goals for each rehearsal as well as for long range planning
  • Directors devour all they can that is available for self-improvement (video, articles, books, etc.)
