Rick Spencer—Curriculum Vitae

Rick Spencer is Director of Music Education for the Barbershop Harmony Society. He travels extensively in the United States, Canada, and abroad for the Society giving demonstrations, master classes, holding workshops and serving as the clinician for many high-school and university choral festivals.

Spencer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and a Bachelor of Science degree in music education (2001), both from the University of Connecticut studying with Dr. Peter Bagley. Prior to his time with the Society, Spencer was a sixth-grade general music and chorus teacher in Connecticut.

Spencer regularly conducts clinics for high school and university music programs. His presentations include an emphasis on the stylistic characteristics of barbershop harmony, tuning, and how singing barbershop can have a positive effect in other genre of vocal music.

Here is what some educators have said about Rick’s work in the past:
“My students have a much greater confidence in their own musical abilities now. They have set a new standard of attention and commitment, which was reinforced by Rick.”

--Pamela Easler, Choral Teacher-Bynes High School, Duncan, SC

“Rick’s performance here yesterday was outstanding. Rick was highly professional, flexible, and quite successful with the students. His rehearsal style was educational, fun, and fast-paced. I look forward to working with Rick again in the future.”
-- Peter Benson, Director of Choral Activities-North Dakota State College of Science Wahpeton, ND

“Rick built on the building blocks that I have already begun in my program. He made a huge impact on the students’ understanding of harmony, vowels, and music as enjoyment/fun.”
--
Brenda Fauls, Choral Teacher-Wake High School, Wendell, NC
