Rick Spencer
Director of Music & Education

Rick Spencer is the Director of Music and Education for the Barbershop Harmony Society. In this capacity, Spencer oversees the music education programs of the 30,000-member international Society, the world's largest all-male singing organization. Most notable are the exciting Youth in Harmony and Music Director Education programs. He also serves as dean of the Society’s annual Harmony University; a week-long educational event offering a wide variety of classes from basic vocal production and music theory to classes which specialize in the art of barbershop harmony. Spencer also oversees the Old Songs Library—one of the largest collections of sheet music outside of the Library of Congress—with an estimated total of more than 800,000 titles, as well as the music recording, licensing, and publishing activities for the Society.

Spencer travels throughout the United States and Canada, giving demonstrations, lectures, workshops, and master classes exposing both music educators and students to the benefits and wonders of barbershop harmony. Spencer is a member of the American Choral Directors Association and MENC, The National Association for Music Education and other professional organizations. He has presented at many state and regional music education conferences and has been published in several music education publications. Spencer has been a Barbershopper since 1989. He brings a wealth of talent and experience to the position as an arranger, Music Judge, coach, quartet singer, and chorus director. He is a district quartet champion and current international 4th place bronze medalist quartet singer (Redline) as well as a district “small chorus” championship music director.

Spencer earned a Bachelor of Science degree in music education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from the University of Connecticut in 2001. Prior to accepting his current position, Spencer was the Student Activities Coordinator for the Barbershop Harmony Society. Before joining the Society staff, Spencer was a sixth-grade general music and chorus teacher in East Hartford, Connecticut. Spencer and his wife, Melissa, reside in Mount Juliet, Tenn., with their three children, Caitlyn, Christopher, and Carson. Rick can be reached at rspencer@barbershop.org or by phone at 800.876.7464.
